Los Angeles Times Food Bowl Launch Party
At this event that celebrates the launch of 31 days of events celebrating L.A.’s amazing food and drink scene, you will find an all-star lineup of select chefs. You’ll feast at food stations staffed by last year’s Restaurant of the Year Award winner, Locol; Rossoblu, the Bologna-focused restaurant from chef Steve Samson; Shibumi, the downtown L.A. izakaya; Night + Market, Kris Yenbamroong’s Thai restaurant; Chengdu Taste, which features spicy, complex Sichuan cuisine; fried chicken from Honey’s Kettle; and Antonia Lofaso from Scopa Italian Roots will debut the new bar concept at City Market South and DTLA Cheese. Guest Chef Yoshihiro Narisawa’s Satoyama Exhibition will be officially launched. And this year’s Gold Award and Restaurant of the Year Award will be presented. The festival will continue to raise awareness and funds to fight food waste, hunger, food insecurity and promote sustainability and waste reduction through charity partners and participating events. bushi by JINYA Opens
This new Japanese dining concept from the team behind JINYA Ramen Bar specializes in hand rolls and ramen. Offering a casual dining experience rooted in authenticity, bushi by JINYA focuses on regional fare from Fukuoka, a city on Japan’s Kyushu Island and birthplace of tonkotsu ramen. Noodles take centerstage on the menu, segmented into three bowl sections: vegan, chicken and tonkotsu. Staying true to the Japanese concept of omotenashi – attention to detail and thoughtfulness- noodles are dry-aged onsite for three days. Menu highlights include Vegan Mazesoba thick noodles, sautéed cauliflower, atsuage tofu, bean sprouts, cilantro & cucumber, served without broth; Kara Men thick noodles, pork soboro, green onion, white onion, bean sprouts, onsen tamago, cilantro with chili oil and chili pepper in a clear chicken broth; and The Bushi Soul Black thin noodles, pork chashu, Brussels sprouts, green onion, kikurage, seasoned egg & burdock chips with garlic oil in a savory pork broth. There’s also a selection of Hand Rolls featuring nori (seaweed) purchased directly from Saga, Japan. Castaway Opens
With beautiful views of the surrounding valley, Castaway has created a seasonally-inspired, steak-forward menu offering interesting cuts of meat, a raw bar, vegetable-centric sides and build-it-yourself charcuterie boards. At the helm is Chef Perry Pollaci, whose previous stints include the seminal Patina Restaurant Group-owned Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as The Royce at the iconic Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. Chef Pollaci will be found nightly at the Chef’s Table, a 10-top set up that can accommodate groups small and large in a community table style and gives you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the Castaway world, with the ability to interact with and learn from the Chef while enjoying an intimate meal. Highlights from the menu include Cape Grim Steaks, Creekstone Farms Premium Black Angus and Mishima Wagyu. Signature dishes include Point Vicente Calamari, Butcher Block Steaks, Charcuterie Boards and seasonal Vegetable plates. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Castaway’s lunch menu features signature items including Butcher’s Block Steak and Eggs and a selection of Tartines on grilled rustic country bread, along with brunch items like Eggs Benedicts, Lobster and Waffles with masago tempura, French Toast with rum-roasted bananas and Shrimp & Grits. Master Sommelier Candidate Paul Coker has curated Castaway’s innovative beverage program.
