Coping With Chronic Anxiety

If you are keen to try and do something about your anxiety, the good news is that there are always going to be steps you can take which should help with this in some way or another. Chronic anxiety is one of the most destabilizing mental health experiences that a person can go through, and it’s something that you are going to find you really do want to try and improve over time if you can. Here are some of the main things you might want to bear in mind if you are keen on being able to cope with chronic anxiety.

Understand What’s Happening

It is always helpful if you can understand as well as possible what is actually happening within an experience, and this is something that you are certainly able to do with anxiety. Chronic anxiety usually stems from a mix of factors, including genetic, brain chemistry, personality traits and life experiences, just to name a few. Understanding that anxiety is a physiological and psychological response is going to help take away some of the shame around it, as it is not a personal flaw or anything of the sort. This in itself can help massively.

Build Consistent Coping Habits

It’s the consistency here which is really key. If you are able to build up some coping habits which you can then rely on when it matters most, that is going to be a huge help. Small, consistent habits often make the biggest difference. This can include regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient sleep – all of which help to regulate the nervous system and ensure that you are going to be able to enjoy a number of activities much more easily too. The key is consistency rather than perfection, which helps to take the pressure off too.

Use Grounding Techniques

People have all sorts of different ways of grounding themselves, and it’s important to make sure that you are developing one or two which are going to be particularly important for yourself. This can bring you out of the ‘what if’ thoughts and into the present reality, and this is something that can help a lot. Some people find that alternative methods can add in to the mix here as well, so that might be worth looking into. All in all, just having some kind of grounding approach is likely to be a huge help for you.

Challenge Your Thought Loops

Anxiety thrives on catastrophic thinking, and this is what the brain is going to do more of when you are more anxious. You can cut through this, however, simply by learning to challenge your thought loops, and the more you practice this, the easier it becomes. It’s the kind of thing that is really going to make a world of difference to your anxiety and you are going to find that you are much more likely to be able to make the most of your daily life.
