Celebrate the life of Jonathan Gold on at this event hosted by Brad Metzger Restaurant Solutions. The evening will showcase the Jonathan Gold “Pico…where I learned to eat.” mural by Hattas Murals, in honor of the revered critic who has given so much to the city of Los Angeles, the dining public, and the restaurant industry. Trejo’s Tacos will provide free tacos to the first 200 in attendance. Attendees are also encouraged to donate to the GoFundMe campaign, created by friends of the Gold-Ochoa family to assist them with immediate expenses. Pitchoun! Opens in the Beverly Center
The family owned-and-operated bakery and café is now open at Beverly Center. Unique to the new location, Pitchoun! will offer several sweet and savory items exclusively available at the new location, including the Beverly Lemon Turnover, a baked puff pastry filled with lemon custard, and a Pitchoun! original creation called Paris-Beverly, a twist on the traditional Paris-Brest choux dessert, with praline flavored cream inside, available with a delicate praline cream as well as a Nutella filling. The Beverly Center location will also offer many of the same morning pastries and afternoon bites found at their DTLA location. You can order crusty baguettes, country rye, sourdough, and ficelles to build a solid sandwich or accompany a cheeseboard, buttery pastries such as croissants, chocolate twists, kouign-amanns, and beignets to pair with a cup of coffee or tea, or grab a millefeuille, giant raspberry macaron or dulce de leche éclair. Stop by for breakfast or brunch to enjoy a classic French breakfast, with half a baguette and butter or homemade jam or soft-boiled eggs the Parisian way. For a quick lunch fix, Pitchoun! has a wide array of specialty sandwiches and tartines, including a traditional Croque Monsieur or Jambon Brie, or the California-inspired Sunshine Tartine, as well as lighter salad options such as the Sheperd Salad, the Saigon Salad or the Monaco. The bakery offers rotating specials, highlighting a new and seasonally inspired pastry, salad and sandwich each month. A selection of gluten-free breads and tarts are also available every day, and those looking to feed a crowd for corporate events or office gatherings can also make use of the large tarts and cakes or the incredible catering services for any event. Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen Opens
The new cafe from Ajay Relan and Yonnie Hagos (The Parlor) and Chef Jason Fullilove (Barbara Jean), is open! Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen is a South L.A. cafe is an inclusive space meant to foster community, creativity, and connection over quality food and drink. The menu features locally roasted gourmet coffee and fresh cold-pressed juices as well as all-day breakfast and lunch offerings, designed by Chef Jason Fullilove, like signature Hilltop Droptops (toasts and open-faced sandwiches), fresh beignets made daily, bowls, salads, and handhelds. Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen will also host quarterly #hashtaglunchbag events. The social media-based #hashtaglunchbag movement was started by Relan at The Parlor and feeds over 1,500 hungry people monthly on the streets of Los Angeles. The Mermaid Opens
Industry veterans, Arelene Roldan and Katie Kildow, are opening their cocktail bar and lounge, The Mermaid, in DTLA’s Little Tokyo neighborhood. The new and improved space (formerly Bar C) offers a variety of tropical-inspired cocktails and classic libations to be paired with their throwback comfort food. Enjoy an exotic selection of potent cocktails like The Mermaiden Voyage, made with two types of rum, house made lime cordial, hibiscus syrup, served over ice with coconut salt rim or their Boozy Snow Cones like Tequila Watermelon, Vodka Cherry Limeade or Rum with Pineapple Coconut. You can also enjoy straight forward classic cocktails like Drink Your Vegetables, a martini made with dry gin, dry vermouth, celery bitters, house-made pickle bring and skewer of Kildow’s famous pickled vegetables. The menu features a mix of small plates and shareables including Tangy Spicy Chicken Wings, Shrimp Remoulade served on Hawaiian rolls, Hearts of Palm Ceviche, and the house-made Tropical Chex Mix.
