1927 Prohibition Era Tijuana
Christina Vega, owner of the landmark restaurant Casa Vega, gathers a talented team for a progressive dinner. Vega welcomes her talented cousin Javier Plascencia, Baja California’s celebrated chef, and author of The Soul of Baja; Bill Esparza, a James Beard Award-winning writer, leading expert on Mexican food, and author of L.A. Mexicano; and Roberto Berrelleza, chef and owner of Babita Mexicuisine in San Gabriel. Celebrating the deeply rooted Mexican food culture, past and present, the six-course dinner includes a signature Casa Vega margarita, souvenir photos, two cookbooks (The Soul of Baja and L.A. Mexicano), and a meet-and-greet opportunity with cookbook signings. Each dish from the tasting menu holds a unique and significant tie to Tijuana’s prohibition era, such as Christina Vega’s Sonora Tamale, which was the only Mexican dish on the menu at the Agua Caliente Casino and Hotel in 1927, despite being a Mexican resort. Javier Plascencia creates a Caesar Salad, among other dishes, which was invented in Tijuana during the same time by Caesar Cardini—an Italian Mexican in Tijuana who owned Hotel Caesar, where both Plascencia and Vega’s grandfathers were employed. $120 (includes a six-course dinner, tax, two cookbooks (The Soul of Baja and L.A. Mexicano), a Casa Vega Margarita, and souvenir photos); Monday, 6:30 pm; Casa Vega, 13301 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423; 818.788.4868
