Barre classes appeal to my inner-dancer and target tough to tone areas. I’ve found no other workout that lifts my posterior as subtly, and only semi-painfully, as barre. And of all them out there — The Bar Method, Cardio Barre, Pop Physique — I always find myself back at The Dailey Method, where every class has a different flow (avoiding boredom) and is interactive with creative uses of a ballet bar, weights, bands, and balls.
And while there seems to be a barre studio every three blocks in LA proper, there aren’t as many options in northern LA. That’s where The Dailey Method Calabasas (3840 Old Topanga Canyon Road, Unit F, Calabasa, CA 91302; 818.224.4810) awaits. The friendly owners Lauren and Helga keep it fun with upbeat music and a laid back vibe, which makes for an approachable atmosphere. In addition to their barre class, they offer a kick ass cardio class called Interval, as well as childcare. Plus, their retail selection of Beyond Yoga, Onzie, and colorful grippy socks always has me browsing.
They say this workout can transform your life. And while I think it takes more than three classes of C-curving, pretzeling, and back dancing a week, it can certainly transform your body, and in turn some of your life (right?). If you don’t know what barre classes are like, picture an ever-evolving mix of movement that draws from different disciplines: Pilates and yoga, dance and ballet. It’s also injury aware, and can help you strengthen and tone without stirring up old traumas. The Dailey Method instructors are hands-on and care that you have proper alignment throughout class; they’ll adjust you when needed, and give you a quick massage during those lovely in-between stretches.
Into it? The Dailey Method Calabasas is currently offering hoopLA readers a special deal, for new clients only:
