Pacific Design Center’s 40th Anniversary
Head over to the PDC for the launch of a series of exhibitions kicking off PDC’s art season. Krysten Cunningham: Procession of a Rectangle, opens at the PDC’s designLAb and seeks to illuminate the relationship between vision and understanding through 6 rectangular jute drawings applied on panels and directly to the walls of the gallery. Using a meticulously process of hand-dying and winding jute string around a grid of nails, LA-based artist Krysten Cunningham creates the illusion of rotating forms in space. She ties together art, design and craft. The show also includes a giant loom inspired by Herman Minkowski’s diagram made to explain Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. In celebration of PDC’s 40th anniversary, there will also be a site-specific commissioned installation and 2 other exhibitions on view that evening in the Blue Lobby by 2J (sculptor Justin Beal and painter Jesse Willenbring) that is inspired by PDC’s groundbreaking design. Won Ju Lim and Kenny Scharf are two other exhibitions in the Lobby. Won Ju Lim’s installation and Kenny Scharf’s Daisymobile, a Pontiac automobile the artist reinterpreted. AGENTS PROVOCATEURS: A Selection of Subversive Skateboard Graphics & Artworks
SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is presenting an exhibition of work focused on provocative skateboard graphics and the pioneers that hurled skateboard artwork into the limelight. Curated by author Seb Carayol and Erica Overskei, Agents Provocateurs brings together a selection of decks and fine art by artists including: Andy Jenkins, Alyasha Owerka-Moore,Ben Horton, Cleon Peterson, Donny Miller, Ed Templeton, Marc McKee, Mark Foster, Michael Sieben, Nil Ultra, Sean Cliver, Todd Francis, and Winston Tseng. Skateboard graphics took a huge leap in offensive expression after the sport was reborn in the 90s. Artists such as those featured in this show brought dark humor and politically incorrect topics to the forefront of their illustrations. They raise serious issues, questioning values and challenging authority, deliberately evoking reactions. In addition to the fine art and collectible decks, the exhibition will feature a limited edition skateboard deck signed and numbered by artist Ben Horton and the release of three special edition prints by Sean Cliver, Marc Mckee, and Todd Francis.
