Owner Chueling Au, known as Leo, spent 11 years representing some of the world’s most prestigious luxury watch brands, including Jaeger-LeCoultre and Vacheron Constantin. That background in luxury aesthetics, detail, and elevated guest experience didn’t stay in the watch industry. A Family Legacy Born in Guiyang

The story of Hengry begins not in Los Angeles, but in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province, in 1991. That’s when Leo’s family opened a tiny restaurant serving a single dish – Miao Sour Soup – learned directly from the indigenous Miao people of the region. That humble little spot, named Shi Wei Xian (“Food Comes First”), grew from five employees into a legendary three-story restaurant with over 150 team members, becoming a regional icon of Guizhou’s signature sour-and-spicy cuisine.

In 1995, the family immigrated to Los Angeles, eventually selling Shi Wei Xian. Decades later, after his career in luxury retail, Leo made a bold decision: he resigned in March 2023 to pursue a lifelong dream of bringing his family’s flavors back to life for a new generation of diners in his adopted hometown.
