Despite the non-descript name, Hutchinson Cocktails and Grill, (826 N La Cienega Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069; 310.360.0884) is not just another Beverly Hills steakhouse. The Hutchinson family’s Indonesian influences go back generations, culminating in the exquisite home grown recipes on the menu. They also have a slew of new signature cocktails, Indonesian-inspired but crafted for the Californian to satisfy any taste, from the Coconut Caucasian (a cleverly named answer to the White Russian, and more politically correct… I think?) to the Scotch for Breakfast, which is as enjoyable as having scotch for breakfast. The Coconut Caucasian features a handmade french press coffee liquor instead of Kahlua and coconut instead of milk for the perfect balance. Scotch for Breakfast is described as a more fun version of a Blood and Sand, made with Bank Note blended scotch, orange marmalade, and sweet vermouth. Some other new cocktails are the Tamarind Sour, made with pimm’s no. 1, Indonesian arrack, tamarind, and vanilla soda, and the Chartreuse Swizzle, with chartreuse, falernum, and pineapple. Hutchinson’s food matches the attention to detail and commitment- all the breads are hand made in house, the preparation for their fried rice starts the night before, not to mention they proudly empty out Bangkok Market’s supply of Indonesian soy. Some tasty dishes to try are the beef rendang sliders and spare ribs.
