Portland-based, handmade and small batch, Salt & Straw Ice Cream (240 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90004) will launch its first Los Angeles location in Larchmont Village this summer. Known for unique, gourmet ice cream flavors and a commitment to highlighting local ingredients, owner Kim Malek and head ice cream maker Tyler Malek were drawn to Los Angeles for it’s thriving culinary community.
While a selection of Salt & Straw ice creams have been available at Joan’s on Third since 2013, the Larchmont shop will be the first brick and mortar outside of Portland. They are creating a fresh menu that celebrate the region. The Maleks are partnering with farmers, producers, chefs, distillers, brewers and butchers, including Santa Ynez Valley Walnut Oil, Stumptown Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts, Tomato Water & Ojai Olive Oil Sherbet and Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese. All ice creams served will be handmade in Los Angeles using local cream with new seasonal flavors debuting each month.
Preceding the August launch, a customized Salt & Straw Ice Cream truck will be popping up around town to scoop Salt & Straw favorites like Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, Freckled Woodblock Chocolate, Chocolate with Gooey Brownie and Double Fold Vanilla.
