Brunch at Sonny’s Hideaway

Sonny’s Hideaway (5137 York Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90042; 323.255.2000) has been making itself right at home in Highland Park.  Sonny’s is everything you want in a hideaway- dark mahogany interiors, enough light to be seen but not too much so you still look good, an extensive and exotic selection of liquors, and fun cocktail names to go with them (See the Naughty Professor). Chef Alexander Abdel-Monem has put together a new brunch menu, split between sweet and savory, and featuring many classic brunch dishes with a surprisingly clean and fresh twist. With the exception of the decadent Brioche French Toast, with cinnamon creme fraiche, one of my favorites, the “sweet” side seemed relatively healthy and not overpowering at all. However, the savory side was my jam, and I could eat the carnitas all day. Also worth mentioning, the biscuit on the fried chicken was as delicious if not more than the chicken.

Don’t let Sonny’s reserved appearance fool you- they have Tiki Tuesday featuring special Tiki cocktails. Even Sonny needs to let loose once in a while.
