A Lunar New Year Cocktail From One of Chinatown’s Most Historic Bars

Celebrate Lunar New Year with a dynamic and thoughtful cocktail recipe from one of LA’s historic Chinatown bars, General Lee’s, The Wise Snake is bold cocktail made with jasmine green tea-infused Kikori Whiskey, apple, lemon and shiso syrup. It was created by Beverage Director Phillip Ly, who said, “With the Year of the Snake coming up, I wanted something that plays with the symbology of snakes and luck. I like the contrasting relationship between snakes and apples in Western vs Eastern culture. In the West, we often associate the Snake and the Apple with sin between Adam and Eve. Whereas in Eastern culture, apples are often used to symbolize luck and wealth. Apples and snakes are also used to symbolize intelligence so I wanted the Apple to tie together all the flavors in the cocktail.”Of significant note is the key spirit in this festive cocktail – Kikori Whiskey – was created by Ann Soh Woods, a Korean-American entrepreneur whose childhood travels to Japan solidified a love of Japanese culture which inspired her to create a unique taste of Japan to share with the world. She is still one of the few AAPI women founders in the spirits industry and uses her platform to support  the AAPI community including through an ongoing collaboration with Daijoubu: A Super Asian Cocktail Pop-up, artists (through the 2022 “Discover AAPI Artists” campaign and 2023 Atsuko campaign) and causes such as GYOPO. The cocktail will be on the menu on Lunar New Year for at least a month. Various prices and hours; 475 Gin Ling Wy, Los Angeles, CA 90012; 213.625.7500
