Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a pizza lover’s dream come true: a Hot Tongue Pizza takeover featuring the Bay Area’s legendary Square Pie Guys. This epic collaboration brought together two culinary powerhouses for an unforgettable night of flavor and community.
Hosted by the brilliant minds behind Hot Tongue Pizza, Alex Koons, and Square Pie Guys, Marc Schechter, the event was a celebration of pizza innovation and friendship. Their shared passion for pushing the boundaries of flavor was evident in every bite.
Takeover Menu
Square Pie Guys took their signature Detroit-style pizza to new heights with larger-than-life 10×14-inch slices. Here’s what we ate:
- BBQ fans fell in love with the Cookout Pie. This sweet & savory paradise is made with juicy chicken, sweet corn sauce, and tangy pickled jalapeños.
- JLIN, created in collaboration with basketball star Jeremy Lin offered a unique twist with white sauce, a mountain of pepperoni, and a touch of green goddess.
- Samin’s Summer Pie, a collaboration with renowned chef Samin Nosrat, was perfectly balanced with white sauce, spicy cherry tomato salad, and a sun-dried tomato vinaigrette drizzle. This was a true culinary masterpiece and my personal favorite.
- For pepperoni lovers, the Spicy Pepperoni was a fiery delight.
To complement the incredible pizzas, we indulged in Hot Tongue’s Vegan Cauliflower Wings, tossed in Square Pie Guys’ signature Lemon Pepper blend. These wings were a revelation – crispy, flavorful, and undeniably the BEST I’ve ever tasted. The entire menu was expertly paired with the sparkling red Montepascolo Toma Rosso Frizzante 2019.
Community and Giving Back
What started as a casual connection on Instagram has blossomed into a beautiful friendship between Alex and Marc, united by their love for pizza, community, and giving back. A portion of the proceeds benefited the Oakland International High School and the Jeremy Lin Foundation.

While Square Pie Guys doesn’t currently have a brick-and-mortar location in Los Angeles, you can still get a taste of their ‘pizza near me’ through the Good Eggs delivery app! They offer a selection of Square Pie Guys classics, like the 6×8 Pepperoni Pizza and the Regular Square Cheese Pizza. Keep your eyes peeled, as there’s a possibility they may pop up in Los Angeles again!
