August 7th marked SHISEIDO Blue Project’s 4th Annual West Coast beach clean-up at the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) US Open of Surfing. Hosted by the impeccable Nina Dobrev, alongside WSL and WILDCOAST – an international team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and addresses climate change through natural solutions, the clean-up brought the community together to learn more about and inspire action for the #WSLOneOcean initiative.
SHISEIDO Blue Project
Established in 2019, SHISEIDO Blue Project is a global effort to promote the protection of our oceans. Through this initiative, SHISEIDO and WSL have collaborated on a series of activities that advocate for respect for our oceans. These activities include cleaning up beaches, oyster restoration, leading global initiatives like WSL One Ocean, and promoting skin sun-safe habits.
Beach Clean-Up
Before the beach clean-up, the former The Vampire Diaries actress and activist spoke about her passion for the oceans, and expressed her gratitude towards the partners and volunteers by stating that, “It takes all of us. It’s not just one person. It takes every person to do their part to make a difference.“
It was then time to grab our buckets and pickers, and clean up the beach. We walked up and down the sand, adding trash to our buckets. This clean-up brought the community together and even inspired several beach goers to get in on the action. In the end, we protected countless sea life by collecting numerous pounds of waste.
SHISEIDO and the WSL
The WSL and their global initiative aimed at protecting the oceans, WSL One Ocean, raise awareness about ocean conservation, protecting marine areas, managing fisheries, and cleaning up what goes into the sea. This is why beach clean-ups are so crucial. They reduce litter and protect critical habitats for wildlife.
For the third year in a row, SHISEIDO partnered with WSL and WSL One Ocean, to launch a Limited-Edition SHISEIDO x WSL Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF 60+ & Clear WSL and SHISEIDO Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+. As the global title sponsor of WSL and part of a long-term sustainability commitment, SHISEIDO donates to WSL’s environmental efforts to inspire, educate, and empower ocean protection. It’s their commitment to sustainable suncare products that makes SHISEIDO sunscreen a favorite among consumers and environmental lovers. It’s all about keeping our coastlines beautiful and supporting the SHISEIDO Blue Project while staying protected from the sun.
The WSL One Ocean also helps raise awareness about other issues in our oceans and galvanize communities to care. Remember, most waterways lead to the ocean, so whether you live inland or on the coast, you have an impact on the marine environment.
SHISEIDO and WILDCOAST
The other beach clean-up partner WILDCOAST fights for our ability to enjoy the sea, by raising awareness about climate change, and safeguarding the coast and ocean for marine wildlife like whales, sea turtles, dolphins, and birds. WILDCOAST is committed to ocean conservation through various programs, such as the management and conservation of 545,280 acres of marine protected areas off California’s coast, as well as their marine debris program, which has stopped over 225,000 lbs. of solid waste like plastic and tires from entering the Pacific ocean through their trash boom (Mexico’s first ever solid waste retention system). Nina Dobrev
The recipient of the EMA Futures Award at the Environmental Media Association’s Honor Benefit Gala 2019, Dobrev believes we can all do our part to help the environment. Known for her radiant skin and youthful looks, the dark-haired beauty stresses the importance of using proper skin protection, especially products like SHISEIDO suncare that not only protects you, but also also helps protect the environment. “I think in every aspect of life and daily routine you can incorporate clean and sustainable products that can make a huge difference for both you personally and the environment as well, so it’s a win-win,” says Dobrev.
Dobrev also understands the importance of using daily sunscreen to maintain her youthful skin. She admits, “Aging is inevitable and I want to embrace that, but you can also use really great skincare products and sunscreen every day to help slow that down.” By applying the Limited-Edition SHISEIDO x WSL Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF 60+ before the beach clean-up, she ensured her skin was protected by the sun’s powerful rays.
When asked what other anti-aging tips she believes in, Dobrev states, I try to stick to the skincare basics, always wash my face morning and night, try to stick to a daytime and nighttime routine… I stopped going to sleep with my makeup on and that made a huge difference for me.“
“It Takes All of Us…”
Coastal conservation is so crucial, and SHISEIDO is really leading the charge. Like Dobrev stated, “It takes all of us.” Together, let’s make a splash for a cleaner future!
