Last Sunday I traded my usual mimosas and brunch for mindfulness and balance (literally) with an incredible experience at Happy Yoga’s Beach Sessions. Part beach yoga, part surfing lesson, these weekly Sunday sessions are the brainchild of two fitness-loving friends, yoga instructor Kristina, and her bestie and surfing teacher Nick. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi and surfer, or a complete newbie, they cater to all experience levels. Their motto? Bring awareness to the synergy of yoga and surfing, and connect with yourself and your natural environment for a morning of sun, sand, and wellness.
Namaste: Beach Yoga
The morning unfolded on a beautiful stretch of the Los Angeles coastline. The rhythmic sound of crashing waves set the stage for our rejuvenating 45-minute beach yoga flow, led by Kristina. Close your eyes and imagine this: stretching and flowing on soft sand with the vast Pacific Ocean as your backdrop. The catch, instead of a yoga mat, we flowed on a surfboard to develop the mind body connection we would later have with our board in the water. “We practice yoga on the surfboards to create connectedness and flow through poses that strengthen and enhance the athleticism of surfing,” says Kristina. Each inhale brought in fresh ocean air, washing away the stress of the week, while mindful movements focused on balance, flexibility, and core strength – all designed to prepare us for the aquatic adventure ahead.
Surf’s Up: Surfing Lesson with Nick
After working up a sweat flowing, it was time to cool off in the water. We began to suit up and my nerves were kicking in. Let me be clear, this was my second attempt at surfing, and I am in no way an expert on the water. But this is the beauty of Happy Yoga’s Beach Sessions. No experience is needed. Whether you are a beginner or advanced, all levels are welcome.
Now with that being said, I was still nervous to go in the water. Would I be able to stand up? Would I fall the whole time? Can I do this? Nick, the surf instructor, had this infectious enthusiasm and calming presence that instantly put me at ease. Before hopping in the water, he gave me a refresher surfing lesson on the sand. We practiced paddling. He showed me how to stand up. But most importantly, he made me feel comfortable on my board and ready to enter the water.
We headed towards the water and with Nick’s expert guidance by my side, I felt a newfound confidence. Sure, there were a few wipeouts (part of the learning process!), but with Nick’s clear instructions and constant encouragement, I actually managed to conquer my fear and ALMOST stand up! The feeling of gliding across the water, the sun on my face, and the thrill of riding a wave – it was pure magic. By the end, I found my inner warrior and conquered my fear.
