The Mar Vista Opens
The executive chef team of Chef D. Brandon Walker, Jill Davie, and Jorge Rivas is serving up progressive Los Angeles cuisine. With flavors from North Africa, Central America, Asia, and the Mediterranean, dishes include Ceviche made from Peruvian bay scallops, Aji Amarillo, and Fresco chili; Fontina Bacon Crab Melt; Persimmons & Collards Salad with dried fruit and spiced nuts; Black Barley Hot Pot with shitake, rapini, and chili de arbol; Cod & Fried Oysters with curried butternut squash and red mustards; Goat & Pasta with charred leak oil, créme frâiche, and dill pollen; Lamb Churrasco with curried couscous, crispy kale, and mint chimichurri. The Smile’s di Alba Opens
Partners Matt Kliegman, Carlos Quirarte, and Melia Marden of New York City’s popular The Smile and Smile To Go open their first West Coast restaurant, di Alba. Helmed by chef/partner Nina Clemente, most recently at The Standard in LA, the counter and takeaway spot offers a variety of Roman-style focaccia with seasonal accompaniments. Options include the gluten-free focaccia called the Amalfi with San Marzano tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella and basil; the Bianca with fontina, taleggio and trumpet and oyster mushrooms; and the Breakfast focaccia with smoked salmon. There are also market-driven salads include the Italian tuna salad and Power salad with raw kale, fennel, watermelon radish and pomegranate seeds. Pastries and desserts from sous chef Zena Scharf include rye brownies with smoked salt; gluten-free toffee chocolate chip cookies; and vegan citrus bundt cake.
