Demitasse Roastery & Kitchen Opens
This new spot in Hollywood brings you hand roasted coffee. Demitasse Roastery & Kitchen; Demitasse’s flagship café is house-roasted small batches of ethically-sourced coffee beans, along with a menu of globally-inspired dishes, natural wines, local beers and signature Demitasse Shims. With direct trade coffees from Columbia, El Salvador and Guatemala (more countries/regions to come) to roasting their own beans on their Probat, Demitasse is at the forefront of forward thinking in the coffee world. A process established by Owner Bobby Roshan, a former corporate lawyer turned café owner in 2011, when he opened the first Demitasse in Little Tokyo, followed locations in Santa Monica and in mid-city. The bright space with floor to ceiling windows, white marble countertops, red-brick walls, allows you to watch the roasting that is done by hand. You can lounge in banquets and on the patio with a fire pit. Demitasse Roastery & Kitchen, offers a full range of espresso drinks and teas, including a house-made chai, four brewed coffees each ground and brewed to order on their Curtis Seraphims, Nitro and Kyoto-Style Cold Brew, and their famous lavender liquid hot chocolate with a torched jumbo marshmallow. Executive Chef Jeff Lustre is behind the dinner menu, along with breakfast and lunch. Plates include Heart of Palm with beets, Cara Cara orange, an egg steeped in black tea and a Mousseline vinaigrette; Purple Yam Gnocchi with Mais fonduta, cauliflower and balsamico; Kabocha-Coconut Soup brings briny ocean flavors of sea scallop, sea asparagus and seaweed froth and the Spanish-influenced Octopus comes with Papas bravas, Romensco purée and salsa pimento; pan-seared cod in a Fisherman-style stew with garbanzo beans and potatoes; the Besugo, a whole red sea bream served with thin pancakes and black garlic; Duck Breast with rainbow beets, sweet potato dauphine and blood orange sauce; and Niman Ranch Pork Belly with Jerusalem artichokes, Quince and Adobo sauce. 1542 N Cahuenga Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028; 323.498.5155

Hinoki & the Bird‘s Tasting Menu
Hinoki & the Bird are debuting their ICHIBA tasting menu, a rolling dinner series that will be available on Wednesday evenings. The inspiration came from executive chef Brandon Kida and the team’s weekly Wednesday morning visits to the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. The word “ichiba” means “market” in Japanese, and is an homage to Hinoki & the Bird’s travel-inspired culinary spirit. The five course menu will change each week, only being confirmed by they find during their visit to the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. Dishes may include Santa Barbara Spot Prawns with Melon, Daikon, Citrus Emulsion served with 2012 F.X.
