Tulum Mexico has become a top destination to visit due to its tropical forest, amazing white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Residencia Gorila was founded with a mission to share this piece of paradise by integrating creative talent from around the world. The team has launched a Kickstarter campaign with rewards including stays at the residence and artwork by resident artists. The funds raised will help them to provide a solar energy system, film equipment, artist supplies, bicycles and a variety of renovations and repairs that are necessary to keep their doors open.
There are several Los Angeles artists that have stayed at Residencia Gorila. Lauren Napolitano is based in LA and her work is being offered as a reward for backers, along with Celeste Byers, an artist who will be donating her work.
Lauren’s work is so intricate and eye catching. Using predominantly enamel on found objects and ink on found paper, she leaves a unique imprint on these objects that have been forgotten. Without modern tools, she invents intricate pattern work, reflective of her mother’s Mexican heritage. She loves noticing human error in all art forms…you know there is a real person behind it, pieces of who they are revealed simply by what they created with their hands.
Celeste Byers loves the ocean, dreams and nature and her work reflects that with a combo nature and the subconscious mind. With this in mind, she creates sculptural installations, film & animation, paintings, drawings, music and murals.
