Chef Frank Fermin (Mozza) and partner Mario Vollera (Piccolo Venice, Barbershop) have announced the opening of South End wine and pizza bar. The restaurant, on the south end of Abbot Kinney at West Washington Boulevard, is soft opening this week with an official grand opening date of September 14.
Frank Fermin, who was most recently Chef Di Cucina at Pizzeria Mozza and consulting chef at Osteria Mozza in the Marina Bay Sands Singapore, is manning the kitchen. Dishes are inspired by eats you would find in a casual European café. You’ll find baked goods and coffee for early mornings, and a more extensive menu starting at 3 pm. South End’s menu includes pizzas, rustic flatbreads, salads, cheeses, and charcuteries ranging from $8-16. Specialties include handcrafted pizza topped with homemade mozzarella, sauce made from slow-roasted Roma tomatoes, and a variety of locally sourced products.
To complement the menu, Associazione Italiana Sommelier Mario Vollera has curated the selection of about two dozen wines from around the world, which range in price from $9-18 by the glass to $36-105 by the bottle. The intimate interior seats 28, and emphasizes communal dining with high-top tables, tables made with industrial wood and metal, and the black cement bar counter. Minimalistic polished concrete floors, exposed wine shelves, and glass pastry cases are accented by a large wall mural by San Diego artist Brandon Roth.
Open daily from 8 am – 11 pm. Delivery and take out are also
available.
