Colonia Taco Lounge (13030 Valley Blvd., La Puente, 91739) is from Ricardo Diaz (Guisados, Cook’s Tortas, and Bizarra Capital) and will be softly open on August 1.
This place is project between Diaz and his sister Stephanie Aguirre (Michelin-rated fish taco in Napa, La Taquiza Fish Taco) and her husband Patrick Aguirre, who was the head baker at Yountville’s Bouchon Bakery for two years and was at AOC a while back. They all agree on home-style tacos de guisados, craft beer and unfussy cocktails.
The slightly elevated tacos will be filled with braised goat and pork (spiced birria), and Carne Asada with charred onions and a fried cauliflower with a Veracruz style salsa and lemon vinaigrette. Keep in mind, no substitutions or modifications are allowed and they only $2.50-3 each. In addition to tacos, expect side dishes like Patrick’s popular homemade pickles and “Nachostadas,” which is a combo of tostadas and nachos topped with Ricardo’s homemade chorizo and melted cheese. Wash it all down with artisan sodas and cocktails like A Street Cart Named Margarita, which is a watermelon Margarita with whole fruit spears, chili rim and Stella Rosa wine for $11. There are also Mexican beers and a rotating tap list of local breweries plus one or two Belgians. But, don’t miss the “Beer Sangria” that Diaz is working on with Monkish Brewing.
