Head down to Little Tokyo for Marugame Monzo (329 E 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90012; 213.346.9762). It’s a dimly lit udon spot with a little twist. You’ll find an open kitchen with a chef making the noodles right in front of you.
The dough’s made from Japanese wheat and flour, and all the broths are also house-made. They have traditional dishes like duck udon and then the dishes with the twists, like thick, uber-rich, miso carbonara udon.
They’ve also got cold udon, that is topped with egg and an add-it-yourself sauce. If you are not in the noodle mood, get the smokey pork belly don. You’ll be as happy as your noodle slurping friends.
