First Fridays at Natural History Museum
If we are what we eat, then we are everything – besides taste and nutrition, our meals tell stories of lifestyle, culture, and surprising science. This year, the Natural History Museum explores food from our insides out; the theme for First Fridays 2017 is “Serving Up Science: The Dish on Food.” Explore how has food changed us and affected our bodies and digestion – from our ancient paleo-diet relatives, to today’s processed snack culture? And how have we changed food: from ancient grains, to food production on a massive scale, and back to the boutique appeal of locally-sourced foods? They’ll explore these topics and also look at access to food—can our diversifying tastes support a sustainable environment? Join top scientists, prestigious food writers, and farm and garden experts in discussion about food evolution and the science behind it. Longtime Los Angeles Times journalist, author and Emmy-winning public television and radio host Patt Morrison joins as the moderator of the five-course series and this weekend, Elaine Y. Hsiao, Ph.D., Craig Stanford, and Mark Schatzker join as speakers. They’ll discuss the human digestive tract, food biology, and changing food patterns. The resident KCRW DJ is Anne Litt, guest DJs will appear, along with bands: ODDISEE (9:15 pm), MNDSGN (8:25 pm), DΔWN (7:30 pm). $18; Friday; 900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90007; 213.763.DINO
