Cheebo, derived from the Italian word for food, Cibo, has been a long standing restaurant on Sunset Boulevard. When I first moved here, I couldn’t help but notice the bright, thick, orange letters that jumped out at me when I passed this spot. I had to try it. I was extremely surprised to walk into a dimly lit restaurant with art hanging all over the walls and a menu that served up healthy, hearty foods, and a large wine list. It was an instant favorite, and I have since been back many times.

When they asked me to come in recently to taste their new menu, I was so excited. I loved how they slimmed down the menu to their best dishes, allowing their food to really shine. They still offer amazing daily specials, along with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options and their “afternoon delight” from 3-6 pm.

We started with a few appetizers, or as they call them, humble beginnings. We had the grilled artichoke, mini calzones of spicy sausage, which my boyfriend was all over, and grilled calamari. The grilled calamari is always something I go for here because it is rare to find. Every restaurant does fried calamari and I am kind of a health nut, so the grilled is what I prefer. Cheebo does it right too. They season it perfectly and they topped it with a slightly spicy mix of cucumbers and tomatoes. It was light and savory. From there, I ordered the baby kale salad made with cabbage, cilantro, mint, scallion, and almonds. I added shrimp and calamari (because I couldn’t get enough). Tyler ordered the special of Rigatoni Parmesan with short rib, which I had a few bites of…out of this world. The short rib was braised for hours and you could tell.

Other menu stand outs include the Grass-fed Piedmontese Flat Iron served au poivre or a la snappy: butter rosemary, garlic; tomato slow-braised brisket; grilled cedar plank salmon; Cheebo’s signature burger, made with four different cuts of grass-fed Piedmontese beef or turkey patty, salmon filet, chicken breast; home-made vegan burger; gluten-free pastas; pizza; and sandwiches. They have it all and they offer numerous options. We ended our feast (well, Tyler did) with apple cobbler and you can too! Because from now until June 30th, mention hoopLA and get a free dessert!
