Duplex on Third

Duplex on Third (8722 W. 3rd St. Los Angeles, 90048; 310.276.6223) is soft open on Third St. Originally an early 1900s residential duplex—hence the restaurant’s name—this cozy, home-like aesthetic comes through in its current incarnation. The open layout, two-story space has a huge al fresco patio that wraps around the restaurant’s exterior, a bar and lounge dotted with plush sofas, arm chairs, and communal tables, an open kitchen with views of Cartmel’s colorful housemade preserves and a dining room with hardwood floors, a fireplace, bookcases with tchotchkes from around the world, and colorful patchwork rugs. A series of sliding glass doors separate the interior lounge and bar area from the patio, all of which open to create an indoor and outdoor space. Upstairs—an area that will open on select days and evenings—also has a bar and lounge decorated with vintage elements, as well as a dining room with windows throughout.

A key component of the Duplex concept, the restaurant is available for private party dining and special occasions—either in its entirety, or the upstairs bar, lounge, and dining room only.

They are offering seasonal, New American cuisine inspired by SoCal produce and artisanal purveyors. Signature items from the dinner menu include Meatball Flatbread made with grass-fed beef, veal, and pork meatballs, Fresno chilies, Broccoli di Cicco, and Asiago cheese; Grilled Peaches with Di Stefano burrata, pine nuts, and Italian salsa verde, served with grilled baguette slices; and Eggplant Agnolotti made with ricotta, young heirloom squash, bell pepper confit, and plum tomato sauce. A Meyer Lemon Tart with almond crust, fresh raspberries, and toasted meringue serves as a signature summertime dessert.

Cocktail options include the Queen Bee (Kettle One, St-Germain elderflower liqueur, prosecco, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and agave) and the Honey Smash (Bulleit Bourbon, lemon juice, honey water, and mint). Duplex’s wine list has both domestic and international labels, with a strong emphasis on California producers.

They are open initially for dinner, with lunch service debuting the week of July 16. The lunch menu will have light bites for professionals on the go, as well as a full midday menu. The cafe-style breakfast will also have takeaway items and in-house dining, with items like seasonal fruit tarts, housemade pastries, tea cakes and freshly brewed coffee. Breakfast and weekend brunch to follow in the coming weeks.
