Eat Real Festival is about to unleash a weekend of good food. It’s one part state fair, one part block party and it all takes place at the Helms Bakery District in Culver City, CA on July 16th and 17th, 2011. Celebrate the very best of regional foods, the people who grow it and make it. It’s free and all food in the marketplace and the street eats (with all local and sustainable ingredients) are all $5 or less. There is also space for local food craft folks (cheese, charcuterie, pickles, jams, etc.) and urban homesteading where you can learn what it takes to get in touch with your inner backyard farmer.
Announced festival highlights thus far include: learn how to make sauerkraut, learn how to build coops & tend to urban chickens, growing food in small places with Fern Richardson, tomato sauce making with KCRW “Good Food’s” Evan Kleiman, pretzel making with Aida Mollenkamp, solar cooking, pantry cook-offs from LA Top Chef former contestants, cookbook swap on Sunday, kimchi for all class with Lauryn Chun, foraging in SoCal, urban bee keeping, beer and wine gardens, community oven for baked bread, garden installations for small and large living spaces, ”The Future of Food Writing” panel moderated by OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano, competition for homemade goods under 4 categories: salsas/spicy condiments, jams, jelly, conserves and syrups, all things pickles, chutneys and relishes, and breads. Butchery competitions with Lindy and Grundy, educational farm-to-table story, food from food trucks and local restaurants such as: Coolhaus, Flying Pig, Nom Nom, Komodo, Vizzi, Global Soul, The Hungry Nomad, Slap Fish. Marketplace featuring locally made crafts and handmade goods from folks such as: Mothercluck, Lindy and Grundy, Shortnin’ Bread, Crème Caramel LA, Pop-ups from: Santa Monica FM and Hollywood Farmers Kitchen. Main Stages for musical acts, DJs, DIY demonstrations and competitions such as pizza tossing and the Flying Knives steer butchery contest.
