East LA Meets Napa
California’s largest community health organization, AltaMed is bringing back its signature fundraiser, East LA Meets Napa. The annual celebration of food and wine will bring the best Latino-centric restaurants in Los Angeles and Latino-owned wineries in Napa together in DTLA’s California Plaza to raise money that will support essential health programs in underserved communities. This year, chefs and vintners from around the world will also participate alongside local, family-owned favorites as part of a “World Tour” theme, creating a one-of-a-kind tasting event. Participants include chefs like Top Chef-alum Katsuji Tanabe of MexiKosher; James Beard award-winning Socorro Herrera of Los Feliz taco stand Yuca’s; and Gilberto Cetina of Chichen Itza. You can also enjoy sips from members of the Mexican American Vintner Association (MAVA) in Napa along with Baja-based Latino vintners. Visiting winemakers include Rolando Herrera and Lupe Maldonado. Manhattan House Restaurant Celebrates First Anniversary
Manhattan House Restaurant, the garden-to-table seasonal gastropub located in Manhattan Beach, is celebrating its one-year anniversary with new food and drink specials in honor of their “House Guests” the entire month of July. Manhattan House elevates the happy hour experience and offers 51% off of all beer, wine, cocktails and “mocktails.” Executive Chef, Diana Stavaridis, has also released a small plates menu, which serves as a perfect complement to their “happier” hour libations. Citizen Opens
Chef Scott Howard is mixing rebellious style and glamour of the 1960s with eclectic American fare at this new Beverly Hills spot. The menu includes signature dishes like house made burrata with grilled red grapes and La Querica ham; white corn and zucchini fritters; Devil’s Gulch pork belly with chorizo, clams and bacon dashi; and desserts like warm brioche doughnuts with lemon custard and blackberry jam. Gwen Opens
Chef Curtis Stone’s new restaurant and butcher shop is now open in Hollywood. Inside the dining room, you will find a glassed-in dry age room displaying ingredients for the five-course tasting menu. Each dining experience begins with charcuterie from the adjacent butcher shop and then salad and pasta courses. The main event is a whole animal broken down into multiple dishes—Stemple Creek Ranch lamb served three ways to start. Vegetarians do have options available for each course of the menu. “Breaking Convention” Summer Soiree
The out-of-the-box summer fundraiser kicks-off LA-based Artist Aaron Axelrod ’s three-day take over of Barnsdall Art Park’s campus, offering a preview of his multi-media exhibition, Dark Matter. Don your chicest cocktail attire for Barnsdall’s “Breaking Convention” Summer Soiree, which promises a night featuring DJs and live musical performances under the stars. Creating a provocative visual experience over the course of the evening, Axelrod will be projection mapping the iconic Hollyhock House; marking the first time this historic landmark has been a part of a public art installation. You will also preview a spectacular Axelrod and Swarovski collaboration art piece housed at LAMAG, featuring almost 700,000 multi-color crystals. CURRENT:LA Water
City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs’ (DCA) CURRENT:LA Water, the City’s First Public Art Biennial is happening this weekend. CURRENT:LA Water is the result of Los Angeles being selected in June 2015 as one of four cities to receive up to $1 million as part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, a new program aimed at supporting temporary public art projects that celebrate creativity, enhance urban identity, encourage public-private partnerships, and drive economic development. CURRENT:LA is a combo of public art and family-friendly programming throughout the City along the Los Angeles River and LA’s other waterways. You can view 15 site-specific contemporary art sites, which have transformed public spaces around Los Angeles.
